Description

Whickham Gardens features five terraces of flats and houses, part of a sixth terrace (64-66), and two bungalows (Nos. 80 and 86). These were built between 1978 and 1981 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and structural engineering by White, Young and Partners. The main contractor was Fairclough Buildings Ltd.

Nos. 80 and 86 are constructed of grey brick, while the other buildings are made of buff brick on a timber frame, accented with dark brown and blue weatherboarding and light blue eaves. The roofs are made of concrete covered with Marley Modern tiles. The design includes bird boxes at the ends and timber porches, as well as external stairs leading to Nos. 42 and 44, and Nos. 88-90 (all flats), which feature brown timber balconies and sloping plastic sheet roofing. The end walls of Nos. 80 and 86 also have brown bird boxes and red-brown weatherboarding. The windows are timber framed with aluminium opening lights, and the doors are timber with glazed panels, some of which have been replaced with hardwood. Blue fences are an integral part of the overall design.

The decision to incorporate both flats and houses was made late in the design process to offer a variety of housing sizes. The houses were positioned closer to Ayton Park, which the development borders. This approach reflected the changing demographics of the area, as Ayton was the first development after the previous housing was completely cleared and the original residents were rehoused, aiming to attract new residents from outside the original Byker area.
