Description
The windmill in King George's Field (Chase Park), located 180 meters south of the street, dates from around 1720. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone, and no roof is visible. The tower is slightly tapered, featuring chamfered stone lintels and irregular-block jambs at the north and south doors, with a date of 1567 inscribed on the lintel. Small windows on all four sides have plain stone surrounds made of four irregular slabs, positioned at different levels. The upper stone courses have been renewed, likely in the 20th century, and are straighter than the slightly sloped lower section. All window and door openings are blocked with sandstone rubble, as are the holes for beams at the second-floor level. A mound surrounds the mill, rising to a height of 5 feet from ground level. A historical note indicates that a newspaper advertisement from 1806 for the remainder of a 99-year lease supports the 1720 date.
