Description
The orangery, located about 300 metres west and 260 metres south of Gibside, dates from the late 18th century. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar and brick and stands as a single tall storey with seven bays. The building features pedimented doorways with a pulvinated frieze in the three-bay returns, and a Tuscan arcade that retains some glazing bars in the tall, empty round-headed openings. The eaves cornice is modillioned, and there is a blocking course adorned with some urns. Inside, the structure has a brick lining with an ashlar south arcade, and there is a central square structure that may have served as a fountain base. At the time of the survey, the orangery was roofless.
