Description
The former Post Office, built between 1873 and 1875, is a three-storey building located on Swinburne Street. It is constructed from tooled stone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof with corniced stone chimneys. The design is simple but includes some classical details. The building has five bays, with a three-bay return to Swinburne Place. The ground floor is rusticated and rises to an impost string that frames round-arched recesses containing round-headed windows and a door on the right. It has a moulded plinth, and pilasters that rest on the ground floor entablature frame the round-arched windows on the first floor, which are adorned with archivolts and key blocks. The second floor features segment-arched windows in raised surrounds, and all windows are sash types. The eaves cornice is moulded and modillioned. This building is included as part of a municipal group of buildings.
