Description
The Clock Tower in the forecourt to the west of the Town Hall was built in 1892 by Gillott and Johnson of Croydon. This cast iron clock tower stands 25 feet high and is designed in a Gothic style, featuring classical motifs within its panels. It consists of three stages above a square plinth, with a tiled clock stage that overhangs and is topped by a small open drum, an ogee cupola, and a vane. The tower is painted black and gold and is inscribed with the words: "PRESENTED TO THE BOROUGH OF GATESHEAD BY WALTER WILLSON, MAYOR 1892." It is an exact replica of the clock at Victoria Station in London.
