Description

The Liberal Club, originally built as a Post Office between 1862 and 1902, is now used as a club and offices. The front of the building was rebuilt in 1883, although the basic structure may be older, with later additions at the rear. It features rendered, solid walls and a slated mansard roof, topped with two mid to late 19th century red brick chimneys on the ridge. The building has a double-depth plan with a long rear wing, likely the former post office sorting room, on the right-hand side.

It stands two storeys high with a garret and has a three-window range, showcasing a strongly emphasized Classical design, particularly at the entrance bay on the right. The ground storey is rusticated and finished with an entablature. To the left, there are two windows with moulded architraves and large triangular pediments on consoles, which overlap the second storey windows. The entrance on the right features a doorway with panelled double doors flanked by Doric columns between antae. The upper storey has rusticated quoins on the left, with the right-hand bay flanked by rusticated pilasters. The front is finished with an entablature that has a dentilled cornice and is topped by a parapet. The two left-hand windows have moulded architraves, while the front has plain sashes. Some original six-pane sashes are visible in the rear walls of the main range and the wing.

Inside, there are no visible features of interest, but the front range may contain early features hidden beneath plaster. This building served as the main Post Office for Barnstaple before the construction of No.10 Cross Street.
