Description
Lloyds Bank is a bank building located on Cross Street in Barnstaple, likely built around 1887. It features a stone ashlar front, while the top of the west side wall is rendered and may be made of brick, as is the rest of the building. The roof is not visible from the street but is probably covered with slate. There are two red-brick chimneys on the ridge, topped with stone caps designed as entablatures. The building has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys high with a garret, displaying a six-window range.
The ground storey is divided into six bays by thick square columns, with paired columns at the left-hand end and in the centre. The bays are mostly glazed and of equal width, except for a wider bay second from each end, which contains a seven-panelled door in the right-hand bay. Above the columns is an entablature with paired brackets that correspond to each column. The upper storey windows feature moulded architraves, with the taller second-storey windows adorned with friezes and triangular pediments. The third storey has continued cills, and there is a dentilled cornice at the top, supported by a large console at the right-hand end. The windows across all three storeys previously had ornamental iron guard-rails, with those in the ground storey incorporating the words "BANK" and "FOX FOWLER & Co."
The interior was not inspected, except for the banking hall, which appears to have been completely altered in the late 20th century. The building is included for its group value.
