Description

This is a group of three grave covers and three grave markers located 4.5 metres north of the Church of St. Mary. The grave covers date from the 17th and 18th centuries and are made of sandstone, all featuring a triangular section. The first cover has skulls at the foot, a coat of arms at the head, and an illegible inscription. The second cover is inscribed "HERE LIETH THE BODY OF ELIZABETH GATENBY, WIFE OF ROBERT GATENBY WHO DIED 1711," and also includes an inscription for John Gatenby, who died in 1900; it has chimney-like blocks at each end. The third cover, also belonging to the Gatenby family, features a cross along the ridge. The headstones date from the 17th century; one is a plain slab inscribed "The body of Henry Fenwick son to Henry Fenwick." The second headstone has a stepped top and elliptical head, with an illegible inscription, and notes a death in 1693. The third headstone has three curved sections at the top and is inscribed for Thomas W.....e, who died in 1697.
