Description

This group of gravestones and table tombs is located 8 yards southeast of the south porch of St Andrews Church in Cubley. The collection includes three gravestones and two table tombs, dating from the late 17th century to the later 18th century, all made of sandstone.

To the east, there is a line of three thick gravestones with semi-circular heads. The southern gravestone features an angel head and wings carved at the top of its eastern face, with an inscription that reads, "Here lyeth the body of John Goodall who dyed 30 of October 1704." The western face of this gravestone has a carving of a shrouded figure set in a deep niche. The central gravestone has a robust open pediment at the top of its eastern face, with an inscription stating, "Here lyeth the body of Thomas ? who departed this life October 27 1704." The rear face is blank except for bead moulding around the edges. The northern gravestone also has an angel head and wings at the top, with a raised oval plaque below inscribed, "Michael Goodall died January ? Aged 46, 1695." The rear face features a raised moulded oval with a carved skeleton, with only the backbone and shoulder blades remaining.

The northern table tomb has a plain base with a wide overhanging slab above, but the inscription is too worn to read. The only decoration is an incised crossbones on the west end. The southern table tomb is larger, featuring bead moulded panels on the base and a slab with moulded sides above. The inscription on the southern side of the base is very worn, reading, "Here lieth the ..... body of George H.... ........ 1763 ......". These gravestones and tombs are part of a larger group of early 18th-century memorials in the churchyard of Cubley.
