Description

The Globe Theatre is a cinema and theatre built in 1935, designed by Percy Lindsay Browne of Newcastle for Charles and Alfred Lewis. Constructed by Arthur McLeod Ltd, it features fibrous plasterwork by Webster Davidson and is designed in the Art Deco style. In 1978, it was converted into a bingo hall.

The main facade includes a central canopy over boarded doors. The ground floor is finished with late 20th-century tiles. Above, the two-storey facade has five windows, with the central three flanked by fluted pilasters and connected by an upper entablature. Fluted panels with circular decorations are located between these windows. On either side, there are tall open panels with ornate iron grills, topped with stepped projecting towers that have small square panels also decorated with ornate iron grills. Beyond these, there is a single window on each side, again flanked by fluted pilasters.

Inside, the auditorium is well preserved and features very fine Art Deco style fibrous plaster decoration. The proscenium arch has canted sides and rounded corners. On either side, there are fictive balconies with open panels containing fountains, above which are rectangular relief panels. These are flanked by tall fluted pilasters with cusped central panels. The ceiling is coffered with similar cusped decorative panels. The balcony remains intact with its original seating, while the stalls seating has been removed and replaced with bingo tables.
