Description
The Church of St Mary is a Roman Catholic church that opened in 1842. The design is attributed to A W N Pugin, with later additions including the north transept, east vestries, and possibly the tower, completed by Messrs C Hadfield & Sons. The church features a four-bay aisled nave with gabled clerestory lights and a two-bay chancel with an apse.
The west front includes an early English font and a central pointed doorway with several orders and a label. Above this doorway are five lancet windows with triple keeled shafts and dog-tooth upper mouldings. A vesica window is set in the coped gable, and there are a pair of lancets at the west end of the south aisle. The tower is located at the northwest corner and has five stages with set-back buttresses that have pointed terminals, which contain blind cusped tracery. The embattled parapet adds to its character. The second stage of the tower features two tall lancets with drilled patterns in the jambs, and the north entrance, located under the tower, also has drilled jambs. There is a main porch to the south and a gabled chapel to the southwest. Inside, there is a four-bay window with an organ loft bay to the west.
