Description
The war memorial in Saltburn commemorates those who died in the Great War. It was completed in 1919 and unveiled on 14 November 1920. The memorial features a bronze sculpture by Reynolds-Stephens, dated 1919, mounted on a reddish polished granite cross with a wide stepped plinth on a darker base. The bronze plaque is set into the arms and shaft of the cross.
The bronze artwork depicts Christ in the tomb, with drapery hanging down into the shaft of the cross, while angels with outstretched wings lean over the figure's head and feet. The artist's signature is located at the foot of the bronze. Long inscriptions on the front and sides of the base list the names of the fallen, and the lower section bears the dedication: "TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE FROM SALTBURN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR ENGLAND IN THE GREAT WAR/ WE HAVE NO GLORY GREAT ENOUGH FOR YOU." The dates 1914 and 1918 are also featured in bronze laurel wreaths on the narrow sides of the base.
