Description

Bardencroft is a villa dating to circa 1897, designed by Brewill and Baily of Derby for William L'Anson. The villa is constructed of bright red brick with pebble dash render to the gable peaks, and has a roof of plain red tiles with brick chimneys. It is built in a Vernacular Revival style.

The villa is two storeys and has a three-window range, with its main facade facing Albion Street and an entrance on the left return to Tweed Street. The Albion Street facade is almost symmetrical, with a 1:1:4:1:1 arrangement of lights in high bay windows with canted corners, wood mullions and transoms, and steep hipped roofs. All windows have leaded lights, some with opening casements, and the first-floor windows abut overhanging eaves. The first floor has shallow oriels supported by single central shaped wood brackets resting on the roofs of the bay windows. A full-width eaves projection overhangs the oriels, from which gable peaks rise in an inverted 'W' shape, each featuring a corniced Venetian window and moulded bargeboards. There are quatrefoil rainwater heads at the gable valley and under the eaves projection, with cast-iron rainwater pipes running through the eaves and to the right of centre. Single casements are located on each floor to the left of centre. The steeply pitched roof has irregularly placed, tall, corniced brick chimneys on the ridge and at the mid slope.

The left return features a centrally gabled stair hall projection with a small light to the right of a projecting porch. The porch has brick side walls supporting a wood structure with shallow-arched heads to the front and side arches, under a steep hipped roof with swept eaves. A full-width window above has nine lights arranged 2:5:2, with a cornice supporting rendered gable. To the left are four-light windows; the ground floor has transom lights, and there is one further ground-floor light. To the right are a small single light and smaller two-light windows, all under brick relieving arches. The interior of the villa has not been inspected.
