Description
The Saltburn Community Centre and Theatre, formerly a Primitive Methodist Church and church hall, was built between 1905 and 1910 by George Baines & Son of London, who won a design competition. The building is constructed in the Perpendicular Revival style.
The main structure is of bright red brick with ashlar and faience dressings, and has a roof of pale grey slates topped with pierced terracotta ridge cresting. The plan includes a chancel, transepts, a nave, and a north-west tower, along with a west porch. The battlemented porch features a deeply splayed stone surround with renewed glazed double doors and a traceried overlight. A tall window in the gable peak is similarly decorated with an ashlar hoodmould and slender shafts rising to domed coping and decorative finials. The three-stage tower has tall louvred belfry openings and an octagonal needle fleche covered in roll-jointed metal sheets. The nave and chancel have decorative ridge cresting.
Inside the community centre and theatre is an ornate wooden hammer beam roof with metal ties and arch-braced roofs to the transepts. The former church hall has tapered square wood piers supporting wood aisle arcades and arch-braced collared roof trusses with two levels of purlin, ceiled above the second purlin. Numerous struts connect the collar ties, which are linked by three straight struts. The church hall is linked to the main church by an east passage. The hall’s north gable has a full-width battlemented entrance porch and flanking rooms, with double doors and traceried windows.
