Description
Signals Coffee Shop, formerly the east wing of the railway station, was built in 1865 with a shop front added around 1900. The building is constructed of yellow Pease brick with terracotta dressings and features an asbestos tiled roof. It is two storeys high and has a three-window range. The west elevation, which faces the station forecourt, is adjacent to the station building on the left.
The central window, left door with upper glazing bars, and right half-glazed door all have segmental terracotta arches with archivolts. The central window includes a mullion and transom, three top lights, and a tiled sill. The first floor has three similar windows above. There is a wide panel above these windows with a terracotta border that has lost its inscription. The shop on the right has a recessed glazed door with a tall overlight situated between narrow lights in a canted corner. Each front features two-light shop windows with leaded top lights, some stained glass, and elaborate bracket-shaped heads resting on very slender colonnettes. End pilasters support a canted fascia with a cornice. The hipped roof has an inserted skylight over the left bay, and the right return has a first-floor window above the shop.
The interior was not inspected. The building is included for its group value as part of the significant collection of railway buildings around the station and Station Square.
