Description
The Queen Hotel and the Queens Public House, located on Windsor Road in Saltburn, were constructed in 1875 and altered in the 20th century. Designed by John Ross of Darlington for John Hutton, the building was originally conceived as part of a larger, unrealised scheme for Saltburn. It occupies a prominent corner site with a distinctive crescent-shaped frontage, angled at 45 degrees to flanking wings that extend to Station Street and Windsor Road.
The building is constructed of white brick with sandstone dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof that now has a bituminous coating. The main frontage is three storeys and five bays, with a central, slightly projecting tower featuring diagonal buttresses. This tower features a quasi-Venetian doorway with renewed double doors; a plaque above the first-floor windows identifies the building as “QUEEN HOTEL 1875.” The windows have sash glazing within stepped and stop-chamfered surrounds, styled with 4-centred heads and continuous hoodmoulds on the lower two floors. Segment-headed windows are on the second floor. Round towers are situated at the end bays. The tower has paired windows, while the round towers have five windows with curved glass on each floor, separated by dogtooth mouldings. Mid-20th century horizontal casement windows have been inserted between bays on the upper floors. A continuous Lombard frieze runs along the eaves. The roofs are hipped, with a pyramidal roof over the central tower and conical roofs with decorative metal finials over the round towers. The building includes ribbed, banded, and corniced axial and transverse stacks. The wings are of similar design. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
