Description
The Albert Memorial is a garden pavilion that was originally the portico of Barnard Castle railway station. It was built in 1854 and re-erected as the Albert Temple in 1864 by Messrs. Shaftoe & Barry of York for the Saltburn Improvement Company. Constructed from ashlar, the memorial features a classical style with paired Corinthian columns that support an entablature and a dentil pediment on the porch roof. Behind the porch, paired Corinthian pilasters flank a large round-headed niche. The re-erection of the memorial cost £300 and was intended as a prominent feature in the newly designed enclosed pleasure grounds.
