Description
The stable block, located about 10 metres west of Wilton Castle, dates from the mid to late 19th century and has some slightly later extensions. The coach house is now used as a swimming pool, while the stables serve as workshops and storage areas. The building is constructed of hammer-dressed sandstone and features Welsh slate roofs with stone ridge and gable copings. It is arranged around a courtyard, open on the east side, and consists of two storeys.
The central coach house has four bays and a slightly projecting two-bay gabled section. It includes segmental-pointed carriage arches that have been glazed, and chamfered two-light casements on the first floor. There are string courses between the floors and below the eaves, along with a circular tablet set in a chamfered square panel beneath a hoodmould in the gable. The roof is a combination of hipped and gabled forms with ridge stacks.
Connecting the coach house to the stable wings on the north and south sides of the courtyard are short one-bay recessed links. The openings in these wings are chamfered and contain casements and boarded doors, with a string course between the floors. There is a one-bay lean-to extension at one end and a hip-roofed stable adjoining the rear of the south wing.
The north range features a six-bay cart shed that has been converted into stables, which includes six boarded stable doors with overlights and six nine-pane sash windows with glazing bars. The east range contains a five-bay stable with boarded doors and six-pane sash windows with glazing bars set in chamfered surrounds. Additionally, there is a range of potting sheds and bothies at the south-west corner of the stable block, a range of cart sheds to the west, and a late 20th-century single-storey extension at the rear of the coach house, which are not of special interest.
