Description

The bastion and adjoining ha-ha wall, located 150 meters north of Kirkleatham Hall Farm, date from the early to mid-18th century. These structures were created as garden ornaments and for defense against the threat of invasion by French privateers. They are made of dressed sandstone, with a brick internal vault, flanking wall, and a parapet that leads to an external stair. The design features a Gothick style, including a short tapered circular tower. The north and west sides have round openings with mock cannon-barrel surrounds set in square recesses, while the east side opening is now missing. There is a pointed doorway on the south side. A corbel table supports a projecting parapet, which was originally embattled, although the merlons and embrasures are now missing. The flat paved roof retains remnants of surrounding benches. A stair and bridge/porch on the south side are now partly demolished. Inside, there is a segmental-vaulted ceiling. The ha-ha wall extends west for 120 meters from the north side of the tower, but the west end is either missing or obscured by forestry work. At the time of the last survey, the structures were disused and dilapidated. A photograph from 1953 shows the bastion with the bridge/porch and stair intact.
