Description

The boundary wall, ha-ha wall, gates, and gatepiers located to the south of Kirkleatham Hall School date from the mid to late 18th century, with the boundary wall constructed around 1800 and the gates and gatepiers added in 1919. These structures form the southern boundary of the grounds of Kirkleatham Hall School and Washaways Plantation. The ha-ha wall, made of dressed sandstone, runs approximately 210 meters alongside a stream and is ramped up at the eastern end to meet the high boundary wall of Washaways Plantation, which curves gently to the northeast and extends about 350 meters, ending in the gates and gatepiers. The walls feature flat copings, while the banded rusticated gatepiers have narrow cornices beneath short pedestals topped with heavily-moulded cornices and ball finials. The two-leaf gates are segment-headed when closed, with each leaf featuring a dograil of arrowheads, a scrolled panel with a double lockrail supporting waterleaf ornament, and alternately turned verticals. The gates also include scrolled mock overthrows and crestings. The ha-ha wall once fronted the grounds of Kirkleatham Hall, which was demolished in 1955, and the gates and gatepiers served as the entrance to the driveway leading to the Hall. At the time of the resurvey, the gates were in a dilapidated condition. These structures are included for their group value and their integral role in the layout of the grounds of Kirkleatham Hall and the Stable Block at Kirkleatham Hall Farm.
