Description

The Brown Monument, located approximately 18 meters northeast of the Church of St. Cuthbert, is a Grade II listed structure dedicated to Elizabeth Caroline Brown, who died in 1905. The monument features a bronze shaft and cross set upon a stone plinth. The tapered octagonal shaft has a squared base on a rectangular plinth and is topped with a Greek cross finial that has a domed center and splayed ends, adorned with a moulded border and strapwork ornament between the arms. Below the knop, there is a figure of the Virgin and Child under a canopy of stylized trees. The rectangular grave cover has a chamfered border and a raised cross. The cast-iron railings and gates surrounding the monument are richly decorated with scrolls and foliage. The box piers for the gates and at the corners have partly-twisted verticals, a moulded cornice, compressed ball feet, and ornate finials. The plinth is chamfered, and a bronze strip with the name of the deceased is affixed to the gate on the north side in raised lettering.
