Description

ORMESBY CHURCH LANE NZ 51 NW west side (off) 6/33 Brown monument, c.18m north-east of Church of St. Cuthbert. - II

Monument to Elizabeth Caroline Brown, died 1905. Bronze shaft and cross on stone plinth. Stone grave cover and plinth of cast-iron railings and gates. Tapered octagonal shaft, with squared base on rectangular plinth, has Greek cross finial with domed centre, splayed ends to arms with moulded border and strapwork ornament between the arms. Figure of Virgin and Child under canopy of stylised trees, attached to upper part of shaft below knop with acanthus-leaf ornament. Rectangular grave cover has chamfered border and raised cross. Railings heavily enriched with scrolls and foliage; box piers to gates and at angles, have partly-twisted verticals, moulded cornice, compressed ball feet and ornate finials. Chamfered plinth. Bronze strip with name of deceased in raised lettering, affixed to gate in north side.
