Description

Country House (now used as an adult training centre), dating to the late 19th century. The building is constructed of rock-faced sandstone in narrow courses, with ashlar dressings and a hipped clay patent-tile roof, featuring four stacks. It is in a French Renaissance style and has two storeys. A prominent eaves cornice is decorated with scrolled acanthus leaf modillions, and a string band runs along the first-floor sill level. The central projecting single-storey entrance porch has paired Doric pilasters and double three-panelled doors. Above the porch, on the first floor, is a sculptured achievement of arms (J.G. Swan) within a rectangular panel, flanked by scrolls on brackets and surmounted by a curved pediment. There is one window on each floor, either side of the porch; these are sash windows, paired on the first floor, and have quoin surrounds that stand proud. Broad angle-turrets are located at each end of the building, with pyramidal roofs and wrought iron finials. The left-hand turret is circular with paired and single sashes. The right-hand turret is square with a rectangular bay window surmounted by a first-floor bow with a heavily moulded cornice.

Inside, there is a Tuscan hall screen and a bifurcated staircase with arched corridors leading to the first floor, and a raised rectangular lantern above a coving. The library is fully oak-panelled and fitted, featuring carved classical mouldings, architraves, and an overmantel panel. Other principal rooms have parquet flooring, elaborately carved classical architraves, cornices, and ceiling mouldings. Fireplaces and large ornamental overmantel panels are present in mixed materials, including limestone and marble, all incorporating classical motifs. The listing also includes plain sandstone gatepiers with ball finials, located to the yard adjoining the north elevation. Also adjoined to the north elevation are a single-storey service wing and laundry, contemporary with Upsall Hall and constructed of the same materials and in the same style.
