Description
Rose Cottage, located approximately 14 metres north of Windyridge, is a farmhouse and blacksmith's workshop dating from the early 18th century, with a rear outshut added in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of dressed sandstone and features a clay pantile roof with a stone ridge, gable copings, chamfered block kneelers, and rebuilt brick stacks. The blacksmith's shop is situated on the left, while the house is on the right. The structure has two storeys and three windows. There is an off-centre boarded door with a chamfered lintel leading into the cottage. To the left end of the blacksmith's shop, there is a blocked cart entrance with a timber beam, which now supports the remains of a late 19th-century sash window. A 19th-century doorway with a boarded door is located to the right of the blocked opening. The windows are sashes with glazing bars, and there are ridge and end stacks. The left side of the building shows blocked ground and first-floor windows, along with a blocked fire window and garret light with remnants of a sash in the right return. At the rear of the workshop, there is a pent extension that forms a catslide with the main roof. Inside the house, there are chamfered beamed ceilings, a stop-chamfered fire beam, and a plain stone fireplace with a spice cupboard that has a panelled door on the left. The stone fireplace in the ground-floor room at the right end features an architrave, pulvinated frieze, and cornice. The property was disused and in a dilapidated state at the time of the survey and was formerly known as Nicholson's Cottage.
