Description
The former Guibal fanhouse at Skelton Shaft iron mine was built in 1870 for Bell Brothers and adapted in 1930 for a Sirocco fan for Dorman Long Limited. It is constructed from concrete with some brick detailing.
The layout includes an engine house that forms the northern room of the building, with a large fan compartment to the south that opens to a ventilation chimney on the east side. To the south are the collapsed remains of the airlock building that covered the uncapped shaft.
The fan compartment was designed to accommodate the original Guibal fan and features an upward extension for a gabled roof, though the roof is no longer present. The adjacent engine compartment is slightly lower and has remnants of a hipped, lean-to roof. All openings are located at first floor level, with a doorway in the north wall aligned with the fan's axis. This doorway is flanked by window openings, and there are additional window openings in each end wall, all with segmental heads and missing joinery. The north wall shows the scar line of the original external staircase. The ventilation chimney remains intact, featuring a simple stepped cornice that matches the stepped projecting eaves course of the engine compartment. The airlock building to the south has mostly collapsed, outlined by substantial buttresses that still stand. The interior was not inspected, but some features in the walling, including pieces of ironwork, suggest the former arrangement of machinery.
