Description

The Church Hall, formerly a reading room, is a mid-19th century building located in Longhirst Village. It is constructed of squared stone with ashlar quoins and dressings. The building is single-storey and features three narrow bays. Each bay has 18-pane casement windows set in moulded surrounds, topped with hoodmoulds. The eaves have a dentil cornice, and the gables are coped with moulded kneelers. An octagonal ashlar stack is located at the right end, while the left end has an octagonal bellcote with a round-headed opening beneath a gablet. There are lower pent porches on either side of the central block, each with 9-panel doors and similar surrounds and details. The returns of the building display small circular openings with raised surrounds, positioned above the porch roofs. A 20th-century brick rear wing is present but is not of interest.
