Description
The Joseph Hepple headstone, dating from 1754, is located approximately 5 meters east of the church porch in Hartburn. It is made of sandstone ashlar and features a shouldered segmental-arched top with moulded coping. Above the inscription dedicated to Joseph Hepple and Jane Thornton (1786) is a cherub. The reverse side has a shaped sunk panel that displays a death's head above crossbones, set against a vermiculate field. This headstone showcases good quality vernacular masonry and is very well preserved.
