Description

Ridley Bastle is a bastle house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 20th century. It is constructed of heavy rubble with massive quoins and features a slate roof and stone gable stacks. The building has two storeys. The ground floor includes a small square window, a 20th-century door, and an old slit window. On the first floor, there are two large 20th-century windows, along with the remains of an original first-floor door that has massive jambs located beneath the left window. A 20th-century attic dormer is also present. The right side of the building has a 20th-century door and a lean-to, with a pair of corbels indicating an earlier gable stack above. The left side features a central boarded door with massive chamfered jambs and a lintel turned on edge, which shows the door check and socket for a harr, along with another pair of corbels for an earlier gable stack above.

Inside, there is a cobbled byre floor, and an original rear slit window is visible. The rough transverse beams supporting the first floor include an unusual forked timber. The original window on the first floor at the rear has been converted into an alcove. The attic floor beams also contain another forked timber, and there is a central heavy principal rafter truss, which is largely concealed by a 20th-century partition.

Despite the extensive alterations to the exterior, Ridley Bastle retains a significant number of original features. It was formerly known as Ivy Cottage.
