Description
This is a group of buildings comprising a former house, cottages, and farm buildings, located within East Thirston Farm Steading. The main house dates to 1728, as indicated by the initials "RSI" carved into the lintel above the doorway. The cottages and farm buildings were constructed in the early 19th century. The buildings are built of squared stone with cut quoins and dressings, and have Scottish slate roofs.
The south elevation is divided into two parts. The original house is two storeys high and has an irregular three-bay front. It features a renewed door in a chamfered surround, with the dated lintel above. There are late 19th-century sash windows with stop-chamfered lintels and slightly projecting sills. Rendered end stacks are present. The former cottage to the left is single-storey and has three bays. It has a boarded door with an overlight, set in what was formerly a window opening on the left, alongside twelve-pane sashes, the left of which is a newer replacement. All openings have tooled-and-margined lintels. The cottage has a hipped roof to the left, with a central white brick ridge stack.
Attached to the rear of this range is another block containing stables and a barn. It has boarded doors, slit vents, and a bricked-up opening which once served as a drive shaft from a former gingang.
