Description
The Vicarage is a 19th-century vicarage built in 1877 by Ewan Christian. It is constructed from snecked rock-faced stone with rock-faced quoins and ashlar dressings, topped with a slate roof, and designed in the Tudor style. The entrance front faces south and features two storeys and an attic with three bays, the left bay being gabled. A chamfered plinth leads up three steps to a studded door located in the second bay, which is set within a moulded four-centred arch that has sunk spandrels. A hoodmould extends over a narrow window to the left and steps over a sunk panel above. The ground floor has mullioned windows, with transoms, and square-paned casements in recessed ovolo-moulded surrounds. There is an attic loop in a similar surround in the left gable, and gabled half-dormers over the two right bays. The right side has a coped gable and two tall stepped and corniced ridge stacks. The left return features two wide bays, with the left bay gabled and the right bay having a canted bay, both with similar fenestration.
Inside, the rooms are arranged around a central hall with a staircase that rises around two walls. The staircase has a closed string, moulded balusters, and shaped newels with ogival finials. There are six-panel doors with contemporary fittings throughout. This large and well-preserved rural vicarage was built at a cost of £2,571 16s 10d.
