Description
A pair of houses, built in 1754 for Eliezer Birch, stands on the west side of Princes Street in Corbridge. The houses are constructed from squared stone with carefully dressed details, and have a Welsh slate roof with stacks extended in yellow brick. They are three storeys high, with a two-bay configuration on either side of a central three-bay section that is slightly projected forward. The houses feature a first and second-floor sill band, and a modillion eaves cornice. The central section has a pediment. The flanking bays have renewed front doors, the left-hand door within an architrave with a pediment, and the right-hand door within a renewed Gibbs surround. Four-pane sash windows are set within raised stone surrounds, with cornices on the lower floors of the central section. Coped gables with moulded kneelers and stepped-and-corniced end and central ridge stacks are present. Small casement attic windows are visible on the returns. A contemporary outshut at the rear has been altered. The interior of the houses was remodelled in the later 19th century. An old, chamfered fireplace is located in the kitchen at the rear of Cross House East.
