Description
Heron House is a house dating from around 1700, located on Corbridge Hill Street. It is constructed of rubble with dressings and large quoins, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The building has two storeys and three symmetrical bays. It features a plinth, and the end bays have a tall moulded band that is broken forward over the window heads.
The central entrance has a 19th-century half-glazed door set within an eared bolection-moulded surround, flanked by plain pilasters with consoles that support a cornice, which is also broken forward at the ends. Above this is a swan-neck pediment that encloses the initials R I. To the left of the door is a 16-pane fixed window in a moulded wood surround, while to the right, and on the first floor, there are 16-pane sash windows in stepped raised stone surrounds. The gables are coped with moulded kneelers, and there are stepped and corniced end stacks.
The rear elevation features a 19th-century wing with a renewed 16-pane sash window on the right and a one-bay outshut from the 18th century on the left. There is a 20th-century flat-roofed infill between these elements, which is not of interest.
