Description
Cliff House and Cliffside is a house that has been subdivided into three separate units. It dates from the early 19th century, with an 18th-century core. The building is constructed of dressed stone, featuring ashlar door and window surrounds, an ashlar porch, and one gable end. It has a Welsh slate roof and stands two storeys tall in an L-shape, with a small extension at the rear.
The front of the house has three bays, with the left bay projecting. The entrance features a six-panelled door with a margined overlight, set in a flat-topped porch located in the angle of the L. The central bay contains a second door, which is now a 20th-century French window with an overlight, framed by a chamfered 18th-century surround that was heightened in the 19th century.
On the ground floor, the windows are 12-pane sashes, while the first-floor windows are shorter 9-pane sashes. The projecting bay has a tall 12-pane sash window with a cyma-moulded cornice, and there is a small window above it. The building features gabled roofs with a steep pitch, a lean-to at the rear, ridged coping, and kneelers. There is one stone corniced ridge stack and three similar end stacks.
Inside, there is an early 19th-century cast-iron staircase with clustered-shafted balusters and a wreathed handrail, along with six-panelled doors and internal shutters. A 20th-century single-storey addition on the left return and a 20th-century lean-to conservatory on the front are not considered to be of special interest.
