Description
The Hunter gravestone, located approximately 15 yards south of the Church of St. Bartholomew, dates from 1807 and commemorates the infant daughter of John and Ann Hunter of Eachwick. This sandstone tablet stands about 4 feet high and features a scrolled pedimented top, which is intricately carved with an angel and symbols representing eternity and death. The gravestone has moulded edges and is inscribed with the following verse:
"Beneath a sleeping infant lies
To Earth whose body went
More glorious shall she later rise
Tho' not more innocent.
When the Archangel's trump shall blow
And souls to bodies join
Thousands will wish their lives below
Had been as short as thine."
