Description

29 Newgate Street is a shop built in the early 18th century. It features brick construction in irregular bond with ashlar dressings and has a Welsh slate roof. The building stands three storeys tall and has three windows.

The ground floor is rusticated, with joints around the openings forming voussoirs. To the left, there is an elliptical carriage arch leading to Old Bakehouse Yard. To the right, four round arches with keystones were formerly part of an open arcade but now include a door on the left and three windows. The fanlights above the windows are decorated with elaborate late 19th-century wrought-iron grilles, and there is a cornice above.

The building has rusticated quoins above the ground floor. The first floor features 8-pane sash windows set in eared architraves, while the second floor has a brick string course and 4-pane sash windows in shouldered eared architraves. A pulvinated top frieze, cornice, and parapet with pilasters and ball finials were likely added in the mid-19th century. The steeply-pitched roof has tumbled-in brickwork in the gables and corniced brick end stacks.

At the rear, there is a stair projection and a rear wing with 12-pane sash windows. Inside, the building boasts a fine early 18th-century open-well staircase with carved tread ends, a wreathed and ramped handrail, and turned balusters with square knops.
