Description
A group of four sandstone headstones is located approximately 1 foot south of the Church of St. Mary in Stamfordham.
The first headstone is for William Collingwood, dated 1752, featuring a shaped top adorned with an angel and swags. The second, for Margaret Smith, dates to 1773 and also has a shaped top, decorated with an angel and symbols of eternity. The third headstone commemorates Joseph Fothergill, a gardener from the late 18th century. It has a scrolled pedimented top with an enriched moulded edge and a roundel featuring a basket of fruit. The inscription reads, "He was skilled in the planting and management of fruit and forest trees, was much employed in that business and gave great satisfaction to his patrons and was respected by a numerous acquaintance." The fourth headstone is for John Keel, from the mid-18th century, and is carved with a mask, swags, and symbols of death and eternity.
