Description
Old Mill, located 30 metres south-west of Linnels Bridge, is a water mill and outbuilding dating from around 1700, with enlargements and remodelling occurring around 1800. The structure is built of rubble with some stone dressings and features a stone slate roof. The original rectangular building has been extended with a later east outshut, a south-west wing, and a lower wheelhouse at the southern end.
On the south elevation, the end of the original block displays a boarded stable door beneath a timber lintel, with a 16-pane Yorkshire sash window above and to the left, positioned in the gable. To the left at a lower level, the end of the outshut has a fixed 12-pane casement window. Set back to the right, the low wing features a small window with a timber lintel. The rear elevation includes two small windows in the end of the original block above the wheelhouse, which has a doorway with a tooled lintel, a small window, and a round-arched tail goit on the right return.
Inside, the mill retains an exceptionally complete set of milling machinery, mostly from the early to mid-19th century. This includes a large timber water wheel with cast-iron bracing and bolts, a cast-iron pit wheel and shaft, and two millstones housed in wood with cast-iron bracing. There is also an unusual pearl barley machine featuring cast-iron wheels and gearing, as well as a rare oat roasting kiln, again with cast-iron shafts and gearing. An early 20th-century water turbine has been inserted between the wheel spokes to generate electricity for the former millhouse.
Historically, a mill has existed on this site since the 14th century, with the last use recorded around 1890.
