Description
These shops, located at 5 and 7 Oldgate in Morpeth, date to the late 17th or early 18th century. They are constructed of brick in an irregular bond, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The building is three stories high with five bays. The ground floor now contains 20th-century shop fronts on either side of a passageway leading to Old Queen's Head Yard. Above, the second floor has two-pane sash windows set in shallow reveals with flat arches. A string course runs along the second floor, above which is a plain parapet. The roof is steeply pitched and gabled.
At the rear, projecting three-storey, two-bay wings extend on either side of the yard, displaying similar architectural details.
The interior of number 7 features an early 18th-century staircase with turned balusters and a ramped handrail.
