Description

The Customs Watch House is a two-storey building dating from the 19th century, constructed from squared and rubble red sandstone with quoins, and features a slate roof with some later red-brick infill. The building has a square plan, with the main entrance leading directly to a stair, and a room located to the right on both the ground and first floors.

The exterior presents a two-bay façade under a pavilion roof, with a substantial chimney stack on the east side. The main (west) elevation has a tall narrow entrance on the left, with window openings to the right on both floors. These windows have slightly projecting stone sills and were originally taller but are now partially infilled with brick. It is believed that the windows were initially shuttered, as indicated by a metal fastening to the left of the ground floor window. The windows on this elevation offer views across the Tweed Estuary. The south elevation, which faces the sea, features similar openings that are centrally placed and also partially infilled. A metal fixing, likely for a flag pole, is located at the left end of this elevation. The north elevation includes a small, high window opening on the right, probably for lighting the stair, and a wide ground floor opening on the left that provides access to a former adjacent single-storey range. The east elevation, facing landward, is blind except for a low inserted opening, and all openings are boarded over.

Interior inspection was not possible.
