Description
The Gothick ruin located 200 metres northeast of Blagdon Hall is a folly from the early 19th century. It is constructed from roughly-squared stone with cut dressings and features a Gothick style. The structure includes a tall wall with a partly-blocked window that has three pointed-arched lights, along with a small two-light opening above it. A Classical scrolly bracket is built in above the small opening. To the right of the main wall, there is a lower fragment that displays a pointed doorway with a hoodmould. In front of the ruin, there is a stone coffin with part of its lid, which is plain and has a slightly arched section.
It is reputed that the coffin was brought from the medieval hospital site at Hartford Bridge, along with a small square stone that has a simple chip-carved cross. This stone is set in the central light of the blocked window and may be a 12th-century headstone, similar to those found in Pittington, County Durham.
