Description

The walled garden at the west end of The Grove is a Grade II listed structure, dating from 1693 as indicated by a re-set lintel, though it is likely from the mid to late 18th century. It features brickwork in stretched Flemish bond with ashlar dressings. The shop within the garden has a Welsh slate roof. The garden is enclosed by a long wall on all four sides, with an internal wall that divides the space into two sections.

In the south-east corner, there is a doorway with a boarded door set in a surround that has a moulded lower half of the jambs, plain imposts, and a lintel. Above the door is the reset datestone, which includes a small carved figure. To the right of the doorway is the shop, a single-storey structure with one bay, featuring alternating ashlar quoins and windows that have flat arches and keystones, topped by a hipped roof.

The garden wall stands approximately 12 feet high and is supported by ashlar buttresses at the corners. On the east and north sides, the wall is chamfered back about 4 feet above the ground, with additional ashlar buttresses rising from the chamfer approximately every 20 feet. The south and west walls are plain, while the north wall has moulded coping, with the other sides lacking coping.
