Description
Bantam Folly, located approximately 200 yards west of Belsay Castle, is a farm building constructed around 1757 for Sir William Middleton. It is built of ashlar with stone slate and asbestos roofs, designed in the Gothick style as a ferme ornée. The structure consists of nine bays arranged in five sections: 1:3:1:3:1.
The one-bay end pavilions feature boarded doors framed with architraves. Each pavilion has a gabled roof with flat coping and kneelers. The left pavilion has a stone slate roof, while the right pavilion is currently roofless.
The central section contains seven segmental arches with keystones, all of which are now blocked and have boarded doors installed. The central arch is wider and topped by a tall castellated dovecote tower. This tower features a large quatrefoil with a moulded surround, which was formerly the entry to the dovecote but is now blocked; it once had a spire.
Inside the dovecote, there are numerous brick nesting boxes.
