Description
Cottages Nos 5 and 6 are a pair of estate cottages located in Bothal Village, dating from the late 18th century and remodelled in 1885. They are constructed from squared tooled stone with ashlar dressings and feature a Welsh slate roof adorned with orange tile openwork cresting and finials. The cottages are 1½ storeys high and consist of three symmetrical bays.
The central bay projects and includes a three-light window on the ground floor and a two-light window above. It is decorated with ornamental bargeboards that have a braced pendant and finial. On either side of the central bay, there are hip-roofed porches that extend outwards, each with a four-panel door and plain overlight. The end bays have two-light windows on the ground floor only. All openings have stop-chamfered surrounds. The windows are small-paned metal latticed casements featuring lozenge-shaped crossing panes and slightly projecting sills. The roof is half-hipped and has two stepped and corniced ridge stacks.
The returns of the cottages display a similar two-light window on the first floor, with a later casement inserted alongside, and ornamental bargeboards. There are later extensions to the rear, but these are not of special interest.
