Description

Cottages Nos 1 and 2 are a pair of estate cottages located in Bothal Village. They were originally built in the early 19th century and were remodeled in 1885. The cottages are constructed from squared tooled stone with ashlar dressings and feature a Welsh slate roof adorned with orange tile openwork cresting and finials. The building has an L-plan layout and the south elevation is 1½ storeys high with two bays.

The central entrance features a 4-panel door with a plain overlight, set within a timber porch that has a lattice design on a stone base. The porch is decorated with openwork bargeboards and a gable finial. The ground floor has three-light mullioned windows, while the upper half-dormers contain two-light windows. All openings have stop-chamfered surrounds. The windows are small-paned latticed casements with lozenge-shaped crossing panes and slightly projecting sills. The half-dormers are also detailed with openwork bargeboards, moulded pendants, and wrought-iron cross-fleury finials.

The roof is hipped to the right, with overhanging eaves on the gable end to the left, and features a stepped and corniced stack at the left end. The left return of the building displays a two-light window and a single-light window above, along with pierced bargeboards that have a braced pendant.

The right return mirrors the south elevation but has the doorway and porch positioned at the far right. One upper window has been renewed, and the stack is located on the ridge. The roof is half-hipped to the right, and there is a two-light window on the first floor, along with ornamental bargeboards at the rear.
