Description

A country house, dating to circa 1660, possibly designed by Robert Trollope for William Carr as a south wing to a previous house. The building was remodelled circa 1850 and altered again in 1881. The earlier house was demolished between 1958 and 1965. Constructed of squared stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs, the south front features a symmetrical design with five bays across two storeys. A chamfered plinth and rusticated quoins are visible. The central, enclosed Roman Ionic porch has panelled double doors with an overlight within an architrave, alongside four-pane sash windows and a reeded frieze topped by a balustraded parapet. Four-pane sash windows are set within architraves, featuring scrolled swan-neck pediments that vary in detail, with re-tooled dressings and a central first-floor window inserted in the 19th century. The roof is hipped, with two stepped and corniced ridge stacks. The left return has three bays followed by two narrower bays, with similar windows having triangular pediments, with the right side being blind. A three-storey, flat-roofed tower is located on the left side, featuring similar fenestration and a balustrade. The right return has three bays with similar window designs. Inside, the fittings are primarily from the mid-19th century, including an open-well staircase with a curtail step, carved tread ends, fluted balusters, and a moulded, wreathed handrail. The drawing room contains a fine plaster ceiling in a mid-18th century style, executed by Italian stuccatori who were working around 1850 at Alnwick Castle.
