Description

Weldon Bridge, which crosses the River Coquet, along with a wall to the north-west, dates from around 1760 and is likely the work of John Smeaton. The bridge is constructed of squared stone and features three segmental arches with slightly-recessed voussoirs and stepped keystones. There is a large keyed oculus between the southern arches, and smaller semicircular-headed arches of a similar design flank the northern arch, with paved inverts positioned well above the normal river level. The bridge has battered semi-octagonal cutwaters and a dentil cornice. Its parapet includes shallow pilasters on both faces and gabled coping; the north parapet flares out to circular piers on stepped pilasters, with a similar design at the south-east end. The west parapet was realigned in the 20th century at a splayed angle, supported by an iron girder. A contemporary wall with flat coping runs north from the north end of the east parapet, terminating opposite the east end of the Angler's Arms Hotel. The bridge closely resembles Smeaton's Coldstream Bridge.
