Description
The sundial, dated 1906, is located 20 metres east of the hall porch in Newton-on-the-Moor. It is made of ashlar stone and features a bronze element. The sundial has an octagonal base with two steps that supports a shaft, which is square in plan with concave faces and chamfered corners, and has a swept profile. The side facing the house includes a carved solar disc beneath a cartouche that displays the date and the initials C.W. (Cecilia Widdrington). It also features a fluted frieze and a moulded cornice. The top of the sundial is adorned with an inlaid dial that includes a gnomon, bronze scrolls, a quotation from Macbeth, and a plate with a sonnet written by S.F. Widdrington.
