Description
Prior Castell's Tower is a Grade I listed tower house located on the Farne Islands. It is believed to have been built for Robert Castell, Prior of Durham, who served from 1494 to 1519, although it likely includes earlier construction elements. The structure is made of random rubble and features a chamfered plinth. It stands three storeys high and has a round-headed doorway on the south side, with an offset above the first floor. The tower is topped with a castellated parapet and includes a higher stair turret at the south-west corner, which has two very small lancet windows for the stairs.
On the north side, there are three early 19th-century windows with pointed-arched heads and intersecting glazing bars. Inside, the ground floor has a keeled tunnel vault and a well in the corner. A mural staircase leads to the second floor, featuring a handrail with splat balusters and newels decorated with incised Gothick designs. The first-floor room contains a trefoiled piscina and a garderobe with a seat. There are two 18th-century segmental-arched fireplaces, one of which incorporates earlier stonework. The original room has been divided into two by a screen of mid-18th-century panelling, which includes two segmental-arched cupboards.
