Description

Canisbay Cottage is a pair of cottages built in 1894 for the workmen who were brought in by Lord Armstrong to restore Bamburgh Castle. The cottages feature wood boarding painted dark green with white trim and have a Welsh slate roof with brick chimneys. They are semi-detached and single storey, consisting of eight bays. The first and fifth bays project and are cross-gabled with bargeboards, while the gable on the right has open-work timber framing. There are boarded doors in the third and seventh bays. The windows have small-paned upper sashes and plate glass lower sashes, although the windows in No. 11 have been renewed. The roof is hipped with three small ridge stacks and large patterned terracotta chimney pots. Originally, these cottages were part of a longer row, but Nos. 7, 8, and 9 (Armstrong Cottages) have been destroyed by fire. The cottages are included for their social and historical interest.
