Description

Belsay Village Cross is a medieval cross shaft and base, dating from the 14th or 15th century. It is made of sandstone and features a large square base approximately 2 feet high, supporting a tapering octagonal shaft that stands about 8 feet tall. The shaft has an oblong base measuring around 9 by 15 inches, with broach stops at the corners. This cross was originally the village cross of Old Belsay Village and was relocated by Sir Charles Monck in the 1830s.
