Description
The Church of St Peter at Spartylea is a former church dating from 1825, with alterations in the 19th century. It is constructed of rubble with rusticated ashlar quoins and surrounds to the west porch door, and has a slate roof. A small ashlar bellcote sits on the west gable, featuring a segmental arch.
The building follows a rectangular plan, comprising a nave and a narrower chancel, flanked by smaller rooms; a west porch is also present. The north and south elevations each have four 19th-century windows, added in 1893 with funding from the Incorporated Church Building Society (as noted on a plaque above the west door). These windows are designed in a 14th-century style, each with two trefoil-headed lights and a quatrefoil above, all under hoodmoulds. A similar three-light window is in the east gable. The gabled west porch has a square-headed door with a datestone above; a plain round-headed door leads from the porch into the church.
Inside, original 19th-century fittings remain, including a hammer-beam roof with blank shields, likely added in the late 19th century.
